State :

Tamilnadu :

T.N. has second highest salary, pension expenditure
  • Tamil Nadu has the second highest expenditure on salaries and pensions among comparable peer States.
  • Now, with over 14 lakh government employees, the State is looking to rationalise its workforce.

Panneerselvamto present Budget 
  • Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, who holds the finance portfolio, would be presenting the State Budget for 2018-19 in the Assembly here on 15.03.2018.
  • There is high expectation that popular schemes will be announced as the Budget comes ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the pending local body elections in the State.
State mulling law on contract farming
  • The Tamil Nadu government is contemplating a law on contract farming.
  • This follows a revised text of the model law prepared by the Central government and sent to all the States recently.

Kerala :

Species restricted to two areas in WWS
  • Eriocaulon govindiana, a new species of flowering plant (angiosperm)belonging to the Eriocaulaceae family, has been discovered from the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) in the Nilgiri Biosphere.
An old-age home for couples to come up in Kerala soon
  • The State government is considering setting up a commission for the elderly, Minister for Social Justice K.K. Shylaja has said.
  • The government was also trying to increase old-age pension, Ms. Shylaja said. Kerala had the largest percentage of the elderly – 15% of the total population. For the first time, an old-age home for couples would be set up in the State. This would prevent separation of couples, Mr. Prabhakar said.

Karnataka :

Rayaraddi seeks grants from Centre for Hyderabad Karnataka region
  • Minister for Higher Education Basavaraj Rayaraddi, who took charge as chairman of the Hyderabad Karnataka Regional Development Board (HKRDB) , demanded special grants from the Centre to develop the region under under Article 371(J) of the Constitution. He said the special status offered to the region would have no meaning if the Union government did not grant additional funds.
50 crore ice-cream making plant opened
  • An ice-cream making plant set up by the Hassan Milk Union was inaugurated
  • The plant, with a capacity to handle 10,000 litres a day, manufactures over 85 varieties available in the market in the price band of 5 to 40. The unit was set up with an investment of 50 crore, in the dairy complex on B.M. Road.
NHRC Special Rapporteur
  • C.K. Mathew, former Chief Secretary, Rajasthan, and currently Senior Fellow at the Public Affairs Centre (PAC), Bengaluru, has been appointed as the Special Rapporteur for South Zone by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
  • He will primarily take care of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep.

Andhra Pradesh :

NGOs bat for grading system in SSC
  • Calling upon the parents and teachers to join hands for cleaning up the SSC examination system, Lok Satta, in association with the city-based NGOs Kriya Society, Padala Charitable Trust and BREAD Society, launched a campaign demanding grading system in exams instead of pass/fail.

India :

Rio govt sails through trust vote in Assembly
  • The Neiphiu Rio-led government in Nagaland won the floor test in the Assembly.The legislators, who met for the first time since the formation of the new government, elected Vikho-O Yhoshu of the NDPP as the new speaker.
Scientist Stephen Hawking is dead
  • The best known theoretical physicist of his time, Stephen Hawking passed away at the age of 76 .
  • The cosmologist and author of the best-selling book A Brief History of Time was one of science’s biggest celebrities since Albert Einstein.
Pune tops quality of governance list
  • Pune, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Bhubaneswar have the best quality of governance among Indian cities in 2017, a study has found.
  • The fifth edition of the Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems (ASICS) by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy spans 23 Indian cities and factors in answers to 89 questions.

  • Bidhya Devi Bhandari  was sworn in as Nepal’s President for the second term.
Trump sacks Secretary of State Tillerson, names CIA director Pompeo for the post
  • Mike Pompeo, now Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), will replace Rex Tillerson as U.S. Secretary of State, President Donald Trump announced Mr. Pompeo will take charge once his appointment is confirmed by the Senate.
NASA invites citizen scientists to observe clouds
  • NASA has announced a global cloud observation challenge — inviting citizen scientists to observe and track clouds using their smartphones.
  • From March 15 through April 15, citizen scientists of all ages can make up to 10 cloud observations per day using the GLOBE Observer app.

Business :

India’s growth to speed to 7.3%: World Bank
  • The World Bank in its India Economic Update has predicted India’s economy to grow at 6.7% in the current financial year, which is set to accelerate to 7.3% in 2018-19 and 7.5% in 2019-20.
  • The Central Statistics Office predicted GDP growth to be 6.6% in the current financial year.

  • TVS Motor Company has launched a new 2018 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.
  • A testimony to the racing legacy of the TVS Apache RTR series, the new TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, according to the company, is the most powerful 160cc motorcycle.
Urea subsidy extended till 2020
  • The Cabinet approved the proposal by the Department of Fertilizers to continue the ongoing Urea Subsidy Scheme from 2017 to 2020.
  • The estimated cost of this would be 1,64,935 crore, the government said. “The continuation of the urea subsidy scheme will ensure that adequate quantity of urea is made available to the farmers at statutory controlled price,” the government said in a release.

India vs Bangladesh Nidahas Trophy:
India beat Bangladesh to register its third win and enter the final of the Nidahas Trophy T20 tri-series in Colombo.
Indian women win thriller
  • The Indian women’s hockey team edged past Korea 3-2 in an absorbing contest to grab a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
  • The South Koreans came from behind twice but India had the last laugh by keeping its nerve in the end.
  • Poonam Rani (6th minute), skipper Rani (27) and Gurjit Kaur (32) netted for the visitors while Yurim Lee (10) and Jungeun Seo (31) scored for Korea.
