Kanchi Acharya Jayendra Saraswathi is passed Away
  • The 69th head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, passed away on february 28 morning. He was 83. His end came in a hospital near the mutt in Kancheepuram where he was taken after suffering from breathlessness .

Brace for connectivity issues on March 1, Aircel tells its users
  • K. Sankara Narayanan, Head – SBU (South), Aircel, said a network disruption was expected again tomorrow. “Customers are advised to make alternative arrangements to stay connected.” Aircel officials said that the company still has over one crore subscribers in the State. “Not everyone has ported out,” a senior official said.
HC dismisses contempt plea in DME appointment case
  • The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on february 28 dismissed a contempt petition filed by Dr. Revwathy Kailairajan in the case pertaining to filling up of the post of Director of Medical Education, stating that it was devoid of merits.
HC issues notice to transport corporation chief
  • The Madras High Court has directed the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Salem) to appear before it in connection with a contempt of court application, along with a demand draft for ₹10,000 towards costs to be paid to a retired employee, who was not given his terminal benefits despite court orders .The order was not complied with, forcing the petitioner to prefer the present contempt application.

Kerala :

Literacy project to cover all tribes
  • The department had identified as many as 100 most backward tribal hamlets in the State, except in Kottayam and Alappuzha, to execute the project in the first phase. “According to a survey of the mission, as many as 1,478 of the 6,870 tribespeople in the 25 hamlets in the district are illiterate. This includes 764 women,” Dr. Sreekala said .
Welfare schemes not reaching tribespeople: HC
  • A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on february 28 orally observed that it was unfortunate that welfare schemes meant for tribal people did not reach them. Amicus curiae appointed in tribal youth’s lynching case .

Karnataka :

Greening exam enrolment saves paper and money
  • P.C. Jaffer, Commissioner for Public Instruction, said: “Collecting data using OMR sheets and digitising it required communication between the board and the school at least five to six times.” Details of students are sourced from the Student Achievement Tracking System, which is the database of all school and pre-university students.
CCTV cameras installed in all II PU exam centres
  • The government is leaving little to chance to ensure that the II pre-university examination, which begins today, is conducted without a hitch. The exam has a history of paper leakages in previous years .Staff banned from carrying mobile phones into the centres .
1,600 MW thermal station dedicated to State
  • “The previous BJP-led government in the State had laid down the foundation stone to the project and forgot about it. It is our government that provided ₹13,250 crore to complete the two-unit power station that has an installed capacity of 1,600 MW,” Mr. Siddaramaiah said.

  • The beauty of Indian culture lies in the fact that it retains its core values even after assimilating good qualities of other civilizations, said Chief Executive Officer of A.P. Creativity and Culture Commission D. Vizai Bhaskar .He said the department was keen on engaging youth in conservation and promotion of cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh .
Inter board decides to utilise tech for exams
  • For the first time, Intermediate exams (scheduled from February 28 for 1st year students) will be held under the surveillance of closed circuit cameras installed in all exam centres.
  • “The mobile application, which can be downloaded from Google Play store, will make it convenient for students to locate their exam centres and reach on time,” said Board Secretary B. Udayalakshmi.

INX Media ex-director Indrani Mukerjea alleges a web of payments
  • In a 'statement' to the CBI, former INX Media director Indrani Mukerjea claimed that $1 million was paid as per the demand to get the matter settled. Of the total sum, payments to the tune of $7 lakh were made abroad, as alleged .
New secretaries named in Central govt. administration reshuffle
  • The Central government on february 28 carried out a reshuffle in the administration with appointments in top bureaucracy at secretary level. The government appointed new secretaries for important departments like mines, personnel, parliamentary affairs, animal husbandry and higher education.
Delhi High Court allows candidates above 25 to submit NEET forms
  • The Delhi High Court on february 28 allowed medical aspirants aged above 25 years to submit their applications for this year’s National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) (Under Graduate) .  Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a notification on February 8 prescribing an upper age limit of 25 and 30 for general and reserved categories respectively, to be eligible to appear for NEET (UG)

Pakistan 'not' on black list, confirms it will be on FATF grey list in June
  • After days of ambiguity Pakistan on february 28 confirmed that it will be on the grey list of Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF) in June but disputed claims of being put on a black list .FATF has highlighted certain deficiencies in the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering of Terrorist Financing framework of Pakistan .
Trump’s Nobel ‘nomination’ leads to police report
  • The Norwegian Nobel Institute said on february 28 that it had filed a police report after receiving a seemingly fraudulent nomination for the U.S. President.“We have good reason to believe that a nomination we received concerning Trump has been falsified,” Nobel Institute director Olav Njolstad told AFP.
Bond films director Lewis Gilbert dies at 97
  • Ritish producer-director Lewis Gilbert, best known for films such as “Alfie” and James Bond films such as “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Moonraker,” has died. He was 97.
Three Nobel laureates blame Suu Kyi for Rohingya crisis
  • Three Nobel Peace laureates onfebruary 28 accused Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the nation’s military of genocide for their role in violence that has forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh.

Manufacturing sector growth falls to 4-month low in Feb.: PMI
  • India’s manufacturing sector activity fell to a four-month low in February .The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) fell to 52.1 in February from 52.4 in January, indicating a modest improvement in operating conditions.
Cognizant moves 8,000 jobs out, adds staff in N. America
  • Inability to secure visas may adversely affect company’s business, says IT firm .The shifting of 8,000 jobs out of India must be read in the context of the Trump administration’s increasingly tough stance on immigration and tightening of visa norms.
