Special passport mela

• The Regional Passport Office, Chennai, will hold a special passport mela at the Passport Seva Kendra here on March 17 to facilitate submission of applications by frequent travellers facing hardships such as waiting to get appointments.

Ultra modern cameras soon to nail road racers

• Alarmed over the spate of road accidents due to illegal racing during night hours, the Chenai City Police has planned to install high resolution cameras on arterial roads.Police likely to seal deal with equipment provider from Kerala.

Tourist arrivals to Puducherry hit a record high in 2017

• Statistics compiled by the Tourism Department showed that around 1.31 lakh foreigners visited Puducherry in 2017 as against 1.17 lakh foreign tourists in 2016. The year saw as many as 16,63,379 tourists flocking the town. This was the highest ever recorded tourist footfall here

Over 50 women come together for the cause of art

• A group painting show featuring about 50 women artists at Indigo Gallery, Cholamandal Artists’ Village, bristled with variety. The exhibits ranged across realistic, semi-realistic, abstract, semi-abstract, contemporary and terracotta works as well as sculptures.

• Tamil Nadu has the second highest expenditure on salaries and pensions among comparable peer States.
• Now, with over 14 lakh government employees, the State is looking to rationalise its workforce.

60 road junctions in city to become pedestrian-friendly

• The Chennai Corporation plans to improve pedestrian facilities at 60 road junctions in the city. The civic body has identified consultants to study the junctions and identify the challenges faced by pedestrians. “The work is estimated to cost  100 crore. Non-motorised transport across the junctions will improve,” said an official.

IFS officer crematedwith State honours

• The body of Conservator of Forests and Director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve S. Manikandan, 45, who was killed by a wild elephant in the reserve forests in Mysuru, was cremated with full police honours including a 21-gun salute in his home town Cumbum

• The Halo Wings run, organised for raising funds for patients with lesser-known disorders was held at Anna University in the city

• சென்னை மாநகராட்சியில் பல மாதங்களாக பழுதடைந்து கிடந்த 2 ஆயிரத்து 917 சாலைகளை ரூ.200 கோடியில் சீரமைக்கும் பணிகள் தொடங்கியுள்ளன.
• தமிழ்நாடு நகர்ப்புற சாலைகள் மேம்பாட்டு திட்டத்தின்கீழ், மாநகராட்சி பகுதியில் உள்ள 15 பேருந்து தடச் சாலைகள், 2 ஆயிரத்து 902 உட்புறச் சாலைகள் என மொத்தம் 2 ஆயிரத்து 917 சாலைகளை சீரமைக்க ரூ.200 கோடியே 17 லட்சம் நிதியை தமிழக அரசு வழங்கியுள்ளது.
• அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து அந்த நிதியில் தற்போது சாலைகள் சீரமைக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

AP police nab 84 from TN allegedly heading to cut red sanders trees

• As many as 84 persons from Tamil Nadu, allegedly employed for cutting down red sanders trees in the Seshachalam forests in Andhra Pradesh, were arrested by officials, near the Anjaneyapuram checkpoint on the Chennai- Kadapa Highway in the early hours of Friday (march 2) .

• The 69th head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, passed away on february 28 morning. He was 83. His end came in a hospital near the mutt in Kancheepuram where he was taken after suffering from breathlessness .
