Kandla Port Renamed as ‘Deendayal Port’
The Kandla Port has been renamed as Deendayal Port from 25th September 2017
• It is named after Hindutva icon Panditt Deendayal Upadhyay.
• The port is one of the top 12 major ports in the country.
• The central government in exercise of powers conferred on it under Indian Ports Act, 1908 made the amendment to replace “Kandla” with “Deendayal”


Kandla Port
• Kandla is a seaport in Kutch District of Gujarat
• It was constructed in 1950.
• It is the largest port of India by volume of cargo handled.
• On 31 March 2016, it created history by handling 100 million tonnes cargo in a year—the first Major Port to achieve the milestone.
Vision-2025 Project Launched in Karnataka
The Karnataka government has launched ‘Vision-2025’ project.
• The project aims at evolving a draft policy for development of the state in next seven years
• Government would seek public opinion on how they want their dream state
• Based on those opinions a draft vision policy for the year 2025 will be prepared.
• A web portal ‘www.navakarnataka2025.in’ was also launched.
• The government is inviting feedback on agriculture and allied sectors, infrastructure, industrial development, services, education, employment and skill development, health and nutrition, rural development, social justice and empowerment, urban development, IT and BT.
• A logo has been unveiled for the project, which is to be backed by a website designed to connect and engage with the youth of the state.
'PENCIL' Portal on Child Labour Elimination Launched
For effective implementation of National Child Labour Project, Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched PENCIL Portal
• PENCIL is an acronym of Platform for Effective Enforcement for No Child Labour
• The endeavour to launch the portal is to combat the menace of child labour, trafficking and sexual abuse
Five Components of PENCIL portal are:
• Child Tracking System
• Complaint Corner
• State Government
• National Child Labour Project
• Convergence
Bharat Yatra
• Kailash Satyarthi is on a Bharat Yatra to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and trafficking.
• He will create awareness on the PENCIL portal
• The Bharat Yatra is the launch of the three-year campaign against child rape and child sexual abuse.
• It is aimed at increasing awareness and reporting of the cases, strengthening intuitional response including medical health and compensation, ensuring protection for victims and witnesses during trials and increasing convictions of child sexual abuse in a time-bound manner.

Banaj Devi to Get Sarala Award for Kathapua
Recognised Odia poet and short story writer Banaj Devi is all set to receive the 38th edition of the prestigious Sarala award for her short story compilation Kathapua.
• Sarala Puraskar is recognised as one of the foremost literary awards of Odisha
• The award comprises a cash award of Rs.5 lakh along with a citation.
• The Sarala Puraskar is instituted by Odia industrialist Dr Bansidhar Panda and Late Ila Pnada in 1979
• It has been continuously awarded by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust IMPaCT, the charitable wing of IMFA Group.
Other Awardees
• Pt. Guru Dr Ghasiram Mishra will be awarded ‘Ila Panda Sangeet Samman’,
• Dr Durga Prasad Das will receive ‘Ila Panda Chitrakala Samman’.
• Both of them will receive a cash award of Rs. 1,50,000 each and citations.
18 year Old from Srinagar Becomes Ambassador for Swachhata Hi Seva
Bilal Dar at the age of 18 has become the brand ambassador for Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
• Dar has been contributing to the ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’ since the age of 12. 
• Bilal Dar was 14 years old when he started earning his living by picking up waste from the Wular Lake in Bandipora district of north Kashmir in 2013.
• He used to collect over 12,000 kg trash annually from the Lake which helped Lake to get rid of pollution caused due to garbage is thrown in the lake by the residents living near the Wular Lake
• He will be given a special uniform and a vehicle to go and meet people in Srinagar's commercial and residential areas, to tell people the story of his work in Wular.
• This will help sensitise urban residents to understand value of environmental issues, cleanliness and garbage disposal,
Mahtab Bamji to Get Living Legend Award by IUNS
Mahtab Bamji has been selected for the Living Legend Award of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences ((IUNS).
• Bamji is a former Director-grade scientist of the Hyderabad-based, National Institute of Nutrition
• She is associated with the Dangoriya Charitable Trust.
• She has been contributing to the efforts of the trust to help improve the nutrition and health status of poor farmers and villagers in Narsapuram on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
• She will be awarded at IUNS's General Assembly which is scheduled to be held at the IUNS-ICN in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 18.
• The award is given to individual members of Adhering Bodies in good standing who are eighty (80) years or above
• It recognises those who have significantly contributed to the work of national nutrition society or regional organisation and contributed to the advancement of nutrition at national, regional and global level through professional activities such as research, teaching, services.

Fortune magazine has released its list of Most Powerful Women in Business.
• ICICI bank's MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar and Axis Bank's MD and CEO Shikha Sharma have secured their places in this list of Most Powerful Women in business outside the United States
• Kochar has secured fifth place while Sharma secured the 21st rank.
• The Most Powerful Women in Business Outside the US list was topped by Banco Santander group executive chairman Ana Botin

Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings 2017
According to Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings of the year, India's Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has become world’s third-biggest energy company.
• The first and second places are secured by Russian gas firm Gazprom and German utility E.ON respectively.
• China Petroleum & Chemical and Russia’s PJSC Lukoil secured the fifth rank and sixth rank respectively.
• Indian Oil Corp (IOC) climbed to 7th position
• Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) secured the 11th rank.
• Overall 14 Indian energy companies have secured places in the ranking.
• Some other Indian firms in the ranking include Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (39), Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (48), Power Grid Corp (81) and GAIL India Ltd (106).
• South Korea’s Korea Electric Power is ranked 4th
• The annual Top 250, published by S&P Global Platts, ranks companies based on financial performance using four key metrics: asset worth, revenues, profits, and return on invested capital.
’Incredible India’ Campaign Launched in Cairo
A month-long Incredible India program in Cairo has been organised by the Embassy of India Cairo, in coordination with the India Tourism Office in Dubai, the Cairo Governorate, and the Cairo Public Transport Authority.
• The campaign will woo Egyptian travellers and make them aware of the magnificent holiday options in the country.
• Under this program, 12 buses of transport authority will showcase various tourist destinations in India, including culture, festivals, monuments, landscape, wildlife, people and food.
• Each bus is uniquely exhibiting two tourist themes of India.
• The campaign will run on five routes in East, Middle, North, South and Giza parts of Cairo Metropolitan area.
• This campaign aims to connect tour operators of both the countries.
• It is notable that the Embassy of India had launched “Incredible India” and “Make in India” campaigns at the metro in April where posters showing glimpses of India culture were displayed on the metro.
• In April, a two-month-long campaign was launched in Cairo metro.
